La Crete Ferry connects Alberta Highway 697 with Highway 35
23 Trader Inc. was set up by Wes Dick and Philip Banman who saw a need for an online visual of this important Northern Alberta Transportation Crossing of the Mighty Peace River at Tompkins Landing. After all the set-up and testing, Images were finally available for the first time August 19, 2020, and FREE to the Public, thanks to these two entrepreneurs as well as to Sponsoring Businesses. The Main Camera showed the La Crete side Ferry dock so travelers could finally see with their own eyes all the way down to the La Crete Ferry. At the same time the other two cameras, faced opposite directions displaying La Crete and Paddle Prairie Access Roads to avoid long wait times due to high traffic counts. This Camera system is located along the access road on the La Crete side at Tompkins Landing inside a chain-link fenced area. Being that it is a 100% Solar Powered System with Battery Backup Images are NOT Live Footage.
In May of 2022 100% of the shares were sold to Larry Neufeld (also manager of La Crete & Area Chamber of Commerce), much thanks to the original Major Sponsors: TREETECH & NOR-WEST BULK LINES. The official Website was re-branded to LaCrete.ca. In August, 2022 Images were increased from updating every 10 minutes to every 1 minute, the Time Stamp was made 4X more visible and a Logo was even created depicting our uniquely designed Local Ferry. An advertising campaign was put in motion as several locals were still unaware that this local service was even available. Firstly I signed up as a New La Crete Business Member of our La Crete Chamber, I attended Get-to-Know-You-Night in September (with Newly Branded Merch: Polo Shirts, High Quality Mugs, Stress Balls, Balloons (helium filled), Fridge Magnets & Auto-Fresheners) and later the 2023 La Crete Spring Trade Show. However, it remained a challenge to show images through the winter months with the decreased sunlight. Nevertheless, with system upgrades to the Website, Solar Panels, Batteries, Internet, Webcam.io, Generator and a crucial addition of a Timer Switch, images were captured for the first time throughout the 2022/2023 winter months. The Tompkins Ice Bridge was finally online. Straightaway, with the new website, statistics showed subsequently higher views of the Camera Images. Although the vast majority of visits are local, 45+ other Countries have discovered our Ferry and/or Ice Bridge online as well.
Main Camera shows Ferry and also Ice Bridge Status: Once Barricade appears on Main Road it certainly means Operations have been Closed. Meanwhile no Barricade means Open. Ferry Status changes due to e.g. 1. Low/High Water Levels. Peace River Levels Tracked: Rivers.Alberta.ca 2. Maintenance/Repairs. 3. Heavy Fog 4. Floating Debris.
Since Ferry and Ice Bridge (Tonnage) Status is entered manually it is always best to watch for Highway Signage for most accurate information. You can also confirm at: 511.alberta.ca and LaCreteChamber.com .
